Pepper Tree
Due to Phu Quoc’s dry climate and poor soil farmers cannot grow rice like their counterparts in the lush Mekong Delta do. Instead they grow spicy black pepper, more than 400 tonnes per year in fact. Travelling in Phu Quoc you will notice the strangely shaped pepper trees, which were brought here from Hainan Island by Chinese migrants. In tribute to the pepper tree is this restaurant at La Veranda Resort. Chef Lan works hard at the wok to ensure the food lives up to the location, and the menu is decidedly Pacific Rim. There is a pretty strong French element as well.
